Nice idea, but too frantic for my liking. -

Deathrow harks back to the golden age of gaming. Rememeber Speedball on the Amiga? Those who do, will likely have fond memories of ultra-violent, volleyball-cum-rugby. Well this game tries, to capture the same frantic, yet controllable rush that Speedball managed all those years ago. Does it succeed? Well, yes and no. The game is basically two teams, of four players each, trying to throw a disc through the opposing teams hoop at either end of the arena. Simple enough you might think. But the game fails to get a fundemental aspect of any sports game right, the camera. It just moves to quickly, and you will likely become disorientated within a few seconds of play. Kudos to the developers in other aspects of the game mind. The passing and shooting sytem works well enough, but it's the tackling that works particularly well. You don't just try and get the disc from the opposition, you can dive in, fists flying, and really cause some damage. At times, the game resembles a beat-em-up more than it does a sports game. And the profanity is welcomed too. In a game trying to portray such a blood-thirsty past-time, some hearty swearing goes down well. So we're are left with a perfectly acceptable take on the futuristic sports genre, hampered to the extent of being a chore to play by a terribly implimented camera system. If you can get your head round that, I'm sure you'll enjoy it
